Too skint to go abroad?

If your heart drops at the sight of air fares for all the family and a foreign holiday seems simply too extravagant this year, then why not take the opportunity to discover somewhere new without leaving the country?

Travel doesn’t have to be expensive; the UK does have an extensive network of hostels that can allow you to go somewhere new without breaking the bank. Travelling doesn’t need to be about shopping in a new city, staying in the latest fashionable boutique hotel or camping near the beach.

So, try something new this year. You may even find staying at home a more restful experience.

Indoor camping: the start of a new craze?

A hotel in Berlin has come up with a novel idea that I am struggling with ever-so-slightly. Inside their hotel, they have installed three vintage caravans and three mountain huts, so that their patrons can combine the best of camping with shelter from the elements…

While this may seem quirky and original, I just can’t imagine why anyone would want to spend their cash on this kind of hotel. Either you like camping or you don’t, so why create a camping-in-a-hotel experience? The vintage caravans look interesting, but if you stay in hotel, surely you would want a room you can stand up in? Or am I getting old?

Time to start planning getaways for 2012

With the first signs of spring just starting to remind us that there is life beyond winter, now is the time to start planning your trips away this year. With everyone talking about austerity measures and economic downturns, getting away from it all has never seemed more attractive a proposition.

Whether you are strapped for cash and will be staying in the UK or are planning a mammoth trip to some far-flung place, planning a trip away can be just the thing you need to raise your spirits and put a smile on your face.

Less holidays due to living costs

More and more people are unable to travel abroad on holiday due to the increase in living costs. Mortgages, an increase in utility bills, an increase in food prices are leaving people with less spare cash to spend on a holiday abroad. It is even resulting in people not being able to take long breaks within the UK. More people are taking shorter UK breaks because accommodation in the UK is by no means cheap and many people find long camping holidays too stressful. Families especially find travelling in the UK stressful due to the limited number of destination that are child friendly. Families tend to travel to coastal regions as the beach areas are one of the most child friendly areas without having to incur large costs.

Travelling with a partner and friends

Is a holiday with a partner or a holiday with friends more relaxing and therapeutic? I short while ago I went on holiday with my partner and friends and had a wonderful time. My partner and I could spend time together as well as spending time with friends. We were able to share some holiday experiences alone and other experiences with friends. For me this was an ideal holiday. Prior to the holiday with my partner and friends I went on a holiday with just my partner which was very pleasant, however I found sharing the holiday experience with more people much more enjoyable. I have spoken to a number of friends since and they found the holiday with partners and friends much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Self catering or all inclusive?

Choosing where to travel abroad is a difficult decision for anyone. Choosing whether to have a self catering holiday or an all inclusive holiday is also a difficult decision. With the exchange rate being relatively poor at the moment, more and more people are choosing all inclusive holiday packages over self catering holidays. I recently booked a holiday and whilst booking I was given the option of a self catering package or an all inclusive package. After looking at the exchange rate I realised that I would get more for my money by choosing the all inclusive option. The Euro to pound exchange rate was 1.13 to 1 whilst booking which meant eating out every day on holiday would amount to a fairly large spend and I calculated the self catering option would easily amount to 20% more than the all inclusive option.

Helpful travel agent

After looking at my options of where to travel on my Holidays in September, I have decided to travel to Rhodes which is an island off Greece. The travel agent was very helpful when booking the trip. They gave me many options on travel destinations which was great being as I only gave them three weeks notice. Before I decided on Rhodes I was just about to book a holiday to another Greek island when the travel agent directed my attention towards the Trip Advisor website. The reviews on the Trip Advisor website about the other Greek island were not very positive at all. When the travel agent looked on the Trip Advisor website for the hotel we had looked at in Rhodes the reviews were fantastic. I was told to take the Trip Advisor reviews lightly but following the number of negative reviews on the other Greek island the choice for me was simple.

Travelling in September

I have been wondering where to travel on my holidays this year and I after a long hard think I decided that I wanted to go on a European beach holiday as it is something I have never done. I have travelled to America and to the Caribbean but I have never taken advantage of the good weather in Europe. I went to see a travel agent and told them I didn’t want a holiday where the night life was out of control. I wanted to travel somewhere that would allow me to relax but if I wanted a decent night out on the town then I wouldn’t want to travel too far to get to a vibrant area. I am travelling at the beginning of September and the travel agent advised me that Greece, Cyprus and Turkey would be the best options for me as the weather is still great and there are many places in these countries that provide what I am looking for.

Travelling with pets

People often travel either by themselves, or with other companions. Some though, travel with animals. Pets often will travel with their owner, although how far they travel depends on the animal. Cats, birds and rodents are unlikely travel companions, due to their willingness to ‘do their own’ thing, as well as rodents having many predators. Dogs are the most obvious pets which will follow their owners to far and away depths, with little fuss. Usually, travellers will take their pets abroad when the heat isn’t as hot as it could be, as some pets have a much lower tolerance to hot weather compared to a human’s.
